About the magazine

Gulf Coast Journal is a literary and arts journal housed at the University of Houston, founded in 1986 by graduate students in the Creative Writing Program. From its inception, the journal has sought to bridge academic rigor with a broad, inclusive vision of contemporary writing and art, publishing work that challenges conventions while remaining accessible. Its core mission is to provide a platform for emerging and established voices, with a particular emphasis on poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that reflect the diversity of the Gulf Coast region and beyond. Over three decades, Gulf Coast has earned a reputation for curatorial excellence, balancing innovative formal experimentation with narrative depth.

Editorial focus

Gulf Coast publishes fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and critical art writing, as well as reviews and interviews, by both emerging and established writers. Each issue features two full-color art sections.

Gulf Coast accepts submissions through its online portal during designated reading periods, typically from September to November and January to March. Fiction submissions should be under 7,000 words; poetry up to five poems; nonfiction up to 6,500 words. Simultaneous submissions are permitted with immediate notification of acceptance elsewhere. The journal values work that demonstrates a strong command of craft, fresh perspective, and emotional or intellectual resonance. Avoid genre fiction and overly familiar themes unless approached with exceptional originality. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, if any. Response times average three to six months; please do not query before then. Payment is in copies and a modest honorarium. For visual art, submit a portfolio of 5–10 images via email with a statement. Always review past issues to understand the journal's aesthetic range.
