Editorial focus
For nearly 60 years, Hanging Loose Press has championed the work of groundbreaking poets and writers whose work has been marginalized by mainstream publishing—work frequently less visible, whether because of gender, race, age, class or socioeconomic status. They look onward towards many more years of making the tent as big as they can make it.
Submitting your work
Hanging Loose Press accepts submissions of poetry, short fiction, and essays, but it is essential to review their current guidelines on their website before sending any work. They typically read submissions between September and May, and they prioritize work that demonstrates a strong, individual voice and a sense of craft. Because they publish both a magazine and books, simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify them immediately if your work is taken elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your publication history, if any, and a self-addressed stamped envelope if you require a response by mail. They are particularly interested in work from writers who have been underrepresented in mainstream publishing, including writers of color, LGBTQ+ writers, and writers with disabilities. Patience is advised, as response times can be several months.
Please send up to six poems or one story at a time. We rarely publish nonfiction, but there are exceptions. We do not publish reviews. For more information, please see the submissions information on our website. Please note that we do not accept simultaneous submissions, and we thank you in advance for your understanding.
