About the magazine

Hunger Mountain is a literary and arts journal associated with the Vermont College of Fine Arts, founded in 2003. It publishes poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and visual art, with a commitment to showcasing both emerging and established voices. The journal's ethos is rooted in the belief that literature and art can foster deep connections and provoke thoughtful engagement with the world. Over the years, it has maintained a reputation for curating work that is emotionally resonant and formally adventurous, often reflecting the sensibilities of its parent institution's low-residency MFA program.

Editorial focus

Hunger Mountain is created by the faculty and students in the Writing Program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. The editors share VCFA’s belief that the arts are central to the human experience and have the ability not only to reflect reality but also to create it. Our masthead changes annually. This allows for aesthetic flexibility, guided by their steady ethics: promoting voices that have gone unheard, expanding their representation and scope, and critically examining their contemporary culture and field.
