About the magazine

Lake Effect is a literary journal affiliated with Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, founded in 1990. It publishes poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction by emerging and established writers, with a focus on work that demonstrates a strong sense of place, character, and narrative craft. The journal is committed to fostering a vibrant literary community in the Great Lakes region and beyond, and it serves as a vital forum for diverse voices and perspectives.

Editorial focus

Lake Effect seeks to publish literary fiction and nonfiction and poetry of the highest quality by established and new and emerging writers from across the country and, in translation, from around the world, and to give that work an attractive venue. Appearances of their work in the Best American Short Stories, Best American Essays, and Pushcart Prize anthologies attests to their success in finding some of the best work in the country to publish.
