Editorial focus
Founded in 1998, Meridian has featured the works of numerous Pulitzer Prize winners, National Book Award winners, and established writers. However, as a magazine edited by young writers, it values nothing more than showcasing tomorrow’s talent, often publishing a new author’s first story or poem.
Submitting your work
Meridian accepts submissions via Submittable during designated reading periods, typically in the fall and spring. Poets should send 3–5 poems; fiction and nonfiction up to 7,500 words. Simultaneous submissions are permitted with prompt notification of acceptance elsewhere. The editors appreciate work that demonstrates attention to language and structure, and they encourage writers to read recent issues before submitting to understand the journal’s aesthetic. Response times vary but generally range from two to four months. There are no fees for general submissions, though expedited options may be offered.
Like most literary magazines, we recommend reading our journal before submitting. Our editors are MFA students, emerging authors who aspire to create tomorrow’s literary fiction and poetry, and that should tell you something about the kind of work we're looking for: fresh, new writing. We’re not hugely experimental (publishing mostly realist fiction and lyric/narrative free verse), but we’re open to works that play with form and reader expectations, as long as the work is serious in its efforts and treats our readers with the respect they deserve. Literary nonfiction is welcomed.
