About the magazine

Pine Hills Review is a literary journal founded in 2014 and based in Albany, New York, affiliated with The College of Saint Rose. It publishes poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with a particular interest in work that is formally adventurous, emotionally resonant, and attentive to the textures of place and memory. The journal emerged from a desire to create a serious yet approachable space for writers at various stages of their careers, and it has maintained a consistent commitment to editorial care and aesthetic range. Its issues are thoughtfully curated, often blending established voices with emerging ones, and it has become a reliable venue for writing that values precision, risk, and humanity over trend or spectacle.

Editorial focus

Pine Hills Review publishes irreverent, fun, and surprising work that does something new. Pine Hills Review remains committed to creating a space for writers from all backgrounds and all identities.

Before submitting, read at least one full issue to understand the journal's range and tone. Pine Hills Review favors work that is polished but not sterile, and it is open to both traditional and experimental forms. Follow the submission guidelines precisely: use the online portal, include a brief cover letter, and do not send more than the stated number of pieces. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify the editors promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Response times vary, so patience is advised; if you have not heard back after the stated period, a polite query is acceptable. The editors appreciate writing that takes risks without sacrificing clarity, and they are known to offer constructive feedback when a piece is close but not quite right.

Read us. Notice we publish one author’s work at a time, as opposed to issues. Send your best work, specifically work that is the outcasts, that other places won’t publish. We encourage hybrid writing. We also encourage female and nonbinary writers, as well as BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ writers, to submit their work.
