About the magazine

Poetry South is a literary journal founded in 1968 at the University of Southern Mississippi. From its inception, the journal has been dedicated to publishing the finest contemporary poetry from the American South and beyond, fostering a community of writers who engage with the region's complex heritage while pushing the boundaries of the art form. Its mission is to provide a platform for both emerging and established voices, with a particular emphasis on work that demonstrates craft, emotional resonance, and a deep engagement with place, history, and identity.

Editorial focus

Poetry South is an international journal that considers all kinds of poetry. Though they pay particular attention to writers from the American South (born, raised, or living here), the magazine has a tradition of including poets from other regions and other countries. They are looking for a great mix of styles and voices that will appeal to their audience and breathe new life into the poetry of the South.
