About the magazine

River Heron Review is an online literary journal founded in 2018 by a collective of poets and educators committed to publishing work that engages with the natural world and the human experience. The journal takes its name from the heron, a creature that embodies patience, precision, and grace—qualities the editors seek in the poetry they publish. With a focus on contemporary poetry, River Heron Review has become a home for voices that are both lyrical and accessible, often exploring themes of ecology, memory, and place. The journal publishes two issues per year and maintains a strong presence in the literary community through its annual poetry prize and nominations for national awards.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

Poets should submit 3-5 poems in a single document, with a brief cover letter and bio. The editors appreciate work that is vivid, precise, and emotionally resonant, with a strong sense of imagery and music. They are particularly interested in poems that engage with nature, place, and the environment, but they welcome a wide range of styles and subjects. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. Response times vary, but generally range from one to three months. Reading periods are typically open in the fall and spring; check the website for specific dates and guidelines.
