About the magazine

Stone Canoe is a journal of arts and literature published by the YMCA Arts Branch of Greater Syracuse. Founded in 2007, it was conceived as a platform to showcase the diverse creative voices of Upstate New York, with a particular emphasis on work that reflects the region's cultural and social fabric. The journal publishes an annual print edition featuring visual art, fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, alongside a rotating online component. Its mission is to foster a vibrant literary and artistic community by providing a professionally curated space for emerging and established artists alike, without regard to commercial trends.

Editorial focus

Stone Canoe showcases the work of a diverse mix of emerging and well-established artists and writers who are current or former residents of Upstate New York. In doing so, the journal supports the YMCA’s ongoing efforts to enrich lives through the literary, visual, and performing arts.

Artists should first review the current call for visual art, which typically opens in the fall. Submissions are accepted through the journal's online portal, and there is no fee for entry. Work in any medium is considered, but applicants are advised to submit a cohesive body of work rather than disparate images. Because Stone Canoe prioritizes regional connections, artists with a demonstrable link to Upstate New York—whether through residence, education, or thematic focus—are especially encouraged. Include a concise artist statement and image list with details. Response times can be lengthy, so plan accordingly and avoid simultaneous submissions to multiple categories within the same cycle.

Submissions are only accepted through our Submittable service. Your cover letter must detail your connection to Upstate New York (i.e. where and when you lived in the region), or it will not be read.
