Writers should submit their strongest, polished short stories, as the journal prioritizes literary quality and originality. Familiarize yourself with recent issues to understand the editorial aesthetic, which favors character-driven narratives and innovative approaches to form. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Always adhere to the stated guidelines for length and formatting, and include a brief cover letter with your publication history, if any.

Please check our website for details on our submissions windows. We also encourage submitters to study the magazine to get a sense of what we publish. SQ fiction is selected on the basis of originality, art, and meaningfulness. Good storytelling and a sense of humor are especially appealing. We like to see a strong narrative design from beginning to end. Most of the work we publish is by newer writers, and we are very alert to the promise of a writer’s growth and of future works that may be discerned in submissions we see. All work must be submitted electronically through the submissions portal.
