About the magazine

Third Coast Magazine is a literary journal founded in 1995 at Western Michigan University by graduate students in the creative writing program. From its inception, the magazine has been dedicated to publishing a diverse range of contemporary poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with a particular emphasis on work that demonstrates formal risk and emotional precision. Its mission is to provide a platform for emerging and established writers alike, fostering a community that values craft, innovation, and the transformative power of language. Over the decades, Third Coast has maintained a reputation for curatorial discernment, balancing the experimental with the accessible, and has become a vital part of the American literary landscape.

Editorial focus

Third Coast is one of the nation’s premier literary magazines—and one of only a handful of nationally distributed literary magazines to regularly include four genres. Third Coast consistently publishes often award-winning fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and drama. Work from Third Coast has appeared in the O. Henry Award Series, The Pushcart Prize Series, Best American Poetry, and Best of the West: New Stories from the Wide Side of the Missouri.
