About the residency

The Harpo Foundation was established in 2006 to support under-recognized visual artists, with a particular emphasis on those whose work challenges conventional boundaries and explores the human condition. The foundation's grants for visual artists provide direct financial assistance to individual artists, enabling them to dedicate time and resources to their creative practice. A distinct initiative, the Harpo Foundation Native American Residency at Vermont Studio Center, offers Native American artists a month-long residency to develop their work in a supportive community. The foundation's ethos is rooted in a belief in the transformative power of art and a commitment to fostering diverse voices within the contemporary art landscape.

Planning your application

Artists should carefully review the eligibility criteria on the foundation's website, ensuring their practice aligns with the foundation's mission. The application process typically requires a project proposal, work samples, and a budget. It is advisable to submit a clear, concise proposal that articulates the artistic vision and the intended use of funds. For the Native American Residency, applicants must be enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe or Alaska Native corporation. Deadlines are firm, and early preparation is recommended.
