About the residency

The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), located in North Adams, Massachusetts, opened in 1999 within a sprawling 19th-century factory complex. Its founding ethos is rooted in adaptive reuse and a commitment to large-scale, immersive contemporary art that often cannot be accommodated by traditional museums. The Studios at MASS MoCA, a residency program launched in 2017, extends this mission by providing artists with dedicated time and space to develop new work in a supportive, non-hierarchical environment. The program emphasizes process over product, encouraging experimentation and risk-taking without the pressure of immediate exhibition outcomes.

Planning your application

Artists should apply through the open call on the MASS MoCA website, typically announced in the fall for residencies the following year. The application requires a project proposal, work samples, and a statement of intent. Emphasize the need for time and space to develop new work rather than a finished exhibition. The selection committee values experimentation, risk, and projects that engage with the unique context of MASS MoCA's industrial architecture. International artists are welcome; however, applicants should note that the residency does not provide a stipend, though some financial aid may be available. It is advisable to apply well before the deadline and to tailor the proposal to the specific resources of the Studios, such as the fabrication shops and large-scale galleries.
