International Residencies is a Dos Mares program. The aim is to place the guest artist in an interrogation of the process of distancing, not only geographically but also conceptually, affectively and contextually. Each of the three phases that structure this system (research, immersion and deployment) allows us to test our relationship to time, to the modalities of transition from employment to work, the question of the value of research and that of production, the relationship to the fulfillment of the being, the articulation between the different social and private relational dimensions. The structure offers research residencies during which no production is expected, no public intervention imposed, no exhibition organized. This research is similar to what in the scientific field is called fundamental research, i.e. research that is not oriented towards a particular application, which in our field takes the form of a work. During several weekly meetings, of about 3 hours each, the permanent curators of Dos Mares, accompanied by occasional speakers, join the resident to develop an art research whose starting point is the work of the artist and his or her investigation project.

The Elevated Spaces Residency is a bi-annual offering of time and space at the residency organisers' property in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Artists will have privacy of the land and cabin, entirely to themselves, to pursue their projects. The cabin is basic. Similar in size and supply to an alpine mountain hut. There's solar/battery power, but not much of it. Outside, there's a comfortable outhouse, a heated outdoor shower, and a small A-frame that can be used as a studio. It's not quite camping, but not far removed from it—with few distractions, just enough creature comforts, and ample nature to inspire. Town is a 15 minute drive down the hill and artists will need to have a car to access and resupply their stay. You can find more details and a brief tour of the property on their website. The land is 10 acres of steep and thickly wooded redwood, oak, madrone, and fir. The area holding the cabin, and associated structures and paths, encompasses about 2 acres. The organisers are offering a two-week block of time to artists, the exact time of which is negotiable depending on the project and artist's needs. While there is no specific guidance on the types of art and exploration they hope artists might pursue, when detailing what you’ve done in the past, and what you plan to create, applicants should also answer the question: "Why here?"
