About the magazine

About Place Journal is a digital publication of the Black Earth Institute, founded in 2011 to explore the intersection of art, spirit, and social justice. The journal takes its name from the belief that creative work is rooted in specific landscapes—both physical and cultural—and that art can foster a deeper sense of place and responsibility. Each themed issue gathers poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that engage with environmental and social issues, often from perspectives that are underrepresented in mainstream literary circles. The journal is committed to publishing work that is both aesthetically rigorous and politically engaged, without sacrificing complexity for message.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Before submitting, read at least one full issue to understand the journal's tone and thematic focus. Each call is tied to a specific theme, so ensure your work engages with it in a substantive way. The journal welcomes both emerging and established writers, but favors work that demonstrates a clear sense of place and a nuanced approach to social or environmental issues. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. Expect response times of several months, as the editorial team is small and reads carefully.
