About the magazine

Sundog Lit is an independent literary and arts journal founded in 2012 by a collective of writers and artists seeking a space for work that is both formally adventurous and emotionally resonant. From its inception, the journal has prioritized writing and art that engages with the complexities of contemporary life without resorting to irony or detachment. Its mission is to publish emerging and established voices side by side, fostering a community that values risk-taking, craft, and the interplay between text and image. The journal appears online and in occasional print anthologies, and has become known for its discerning eye and commitment to work that challenges conventional boundaries.

Editorial focus

Sundog Lit is committed to publishing pieces that engage with tension, introspection, empathy, considered positionality, thoughtful form play, emotional courage, and musicality.

Before submitting, read several recent issues to understand the journal's aesthetic, which favors work that is both intellectually curious and emotionally direct. They accept poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art, including illustration. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but notify them immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your submission, and ensure that visual art is submitted as high-resolution files. Response times vary, but generally range from one to three months. They appreciate work that takes risks and avoids cliché.

We are equally committed to uplifting voices from all corners in hopes of breaking down ideas of who is widely read and rebelling against normative power structures that stifle expression. The first 200 submissions in both our spring and fall submission periods are free.
