About the magazine

The Adroit Journal is a literary magazine founded in 2010 by Peter LaBerge while he was still in high school. It has since grown into a prominent publication that champions emerging writers alongside established voices. The journal is known for its discerning editorial eye, publishing poetry, prose, and art that often explores the intersections of personal and political, the lyrical and the narrative. Its mission is to foster a community of writers and artists, providing a platform for work that is both innovative and accessible. In addition to its regular issues, The Adroit Journal runs the Adroit Prizes for poetry and prose, and an annual summer mentorship program that pairs emerging writers with established mentors.

Editorial focus

The Adroit Journal is looking for work that’s bizarre, authentic, subtle, outrageous, indefinable, raw, paradoxical. The editors have their eyes on the horizon. Send them work that lives between the land and the sky.

Writers should familiarize themselves with the journal's aesthetic by reading recent issues. Submissions are typically open for poetry, prose, and art. The journal values work that is polished, emotionally resonant, and formally inventive. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with your submission. For the Adroit Prizes, follow specific guidelines and deadlines. The mentorship program is open to high school and undergraduate students; applications require a writing sample and statement of need.

Please note that we accept simultaneous submissions (and appreciate acknowledgement of such submissions), but do not accept reprints/previously published work. Please include a third-person bio in your cover letter. We’ve got our eyes on the horizon. Send us writing that lives just between the land and the sky. For examples of the work we tend to publish, please consult our current issue and online archives.
