About the magazine

New World Writing Quarterly is an online literary magazine that emerged from the legacy of the influential print journal New World Writing, which published seven issues between 1952 and 1955 and featured early work by writers such as Jack Kerouac, Samuel Beckett, and Flannery O'Connor. Reestablished in the digital era, the quarterly continues its founding ethos of presenting innovative fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction from both emerging and established voices. Its mission is to provide a discerning platform for writing that challenges conventions and reflects a global, contemporary sensibility, without the constraints of commercial publishing.

Editorial focus

New World Writing Quarterly began life as Mississippi Review Online , a personal website that the editor (who was then also editor of Mississippi Review , the print magazine) put online in 1995.

Writers should familiarize themselves with recent issues to understand the magazine's aesthetic range, which favors work that is formally inventive yet emotionally resonant. Submissions are typically open for fiction, poetry, and nonfiction; simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but prompt notification of acceptance elsewhere is expected. Cover letters should be brief and professional, and manuscripts should follow standard formatting guidelines. Response times vary, so patience is advised. The editors value clarity, originality, and a strong command of language over trend-driven themes.

New World Writing Quarterly is now an online quarterly. We publish four issues yearly, accepting submissions the first fourteen days of January, April, July, and October.
