About the magazine

Anacapa Review is a literary journal founded with the conviction that serious writing thrives on attentive, unhurried reading. Taking its name from the rugged Channel Island chain off California's coast, the journal positions itself as a site of durable, elemental craft—a place where language is tested against silence and scale. Since its inception, it has published poetry, short fiction, and essays that favor precision over performance, and interiority over topicality. Its editorial ethos is rooted in the belief that literature is not a marketplace but a practice, and that the best work often arrives without fanfare. The journal maintains a deliberately modest digital footprint, prioritizing the text itself over auxiliary content, and it has cultivated a readership that values the slow, recursive work of rereading.

Editorial focus

Launched in March 2023, Anacapa Review is an online poetry journal and an extension of Gunpowder Press, an independent poetry publisher founded by David Starkey in 2013. Starkey and coeditor Chryss Yost publish a carefully curated set of poems, featuring established poets and newcomers side-by-side, in a format that can be read in one sitting.

Submitting your work

Reading periodJan 1 to Dec 31
Reading feeYes
PaymentNo payment
Response timeLess than 3 months
Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Before submitting, read at least two full issues to internalize the journal's tonal range—work that is spare, image-driven, and resistant to easy resolution. Anacapa Review favors poems and prose that trust the reader's intelligence; avoid explanatory framing or workshop-style epiphanies. Submissions should be polished but not overworked, and cover letters should be brief and free of publication lists. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but notify promptly upon acceptance elsewhere. The journal reads year-round but responds slowly; patience is part of the contract. There are no fees for general submissions, and the editors prioritize work from writers who demonstrate a sustained engagement with the journal's aesthetic rather than those seeking a quick credit.
