About the magazine

Founded in 1969 by Robert Spiess, Modern Haiku is one of the longest-running English-language journals dedicated to haiku and related short forms. From its inception, the journal has balanced a deep respect for the Japanese tradition with a commitment to contemporary English-language practice, publishing work that is both formally precise and emotionally resonant. Its mission is to foster the art of haiku through careful editorial selection, critical essays, and book reviews, serving as a vital forum for poets at all stages of their careers.

Editorial focus

Modern Haiku , the oldest haiku journal outside Japan, seeks the best in contemporary English-language haiku, senryu, haibun, and haiga, as well as book reviews and essays on related topics. The editors also publish work originally written in languages other than English, together with translations.

Poets should submit only previously unpublished work, typically 5–10 haiku per submission, with a brief cover letter. Familiarity with the journal's aesthetic—rooted in concrete imagery, seasonal awareness, and economy of language—is essential. Simultaneous submissions are discouraged, and response times can be several months. Reading recent issues before submitting is strongly advised.

Before submitting, please be sure you know our notion of what a haiku is. Find a copy of the journal or visit our website. Select and edit your work carefully and send five to fifteen haiku per submission. See our submission guidelines at our webpage.
