About the magazine

Founded in 1977 by a collective of Chicago-based writers and artists, Another Chicago Magazine (ACM) has long served as a vital platform for innovative poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. From its inception, ACM has championed work that challenges conventional narratives and aesthetics, fostering a community that values experimentation, diversity, and intellectual rigor. The magazine remains committed to publishing emerging and established voices that push the boundaries of contemporary literature.

Editorial focus

Our tastes range from conventional to experimental, but we are especially drawn to writing that engages deeply with the world without becoming polemical or didactic. We have long championed independent presses—those enterprises Raymond Carver called “the backbone of the national literature.” We publish interviews with mostly small-press authors and review books from university presses and independent publishers. We are drawn to political subject matter and publish conversations with activists and artists. We proudly support diversity, equity, and inclusion.

ACM welcomes submissions of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction that demonstrate originality and craft. They prioritize work that is intellectually ambitious and emotionally resonant. Before submitting, familiarize yourself with the magazine's aesthetic by reading recent issues. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if your work is placed elsewhere. Expect response times of 3-6 months; patience is advised.

In addition to writing, we also welcome original art and audio/visual work. Our reading period rotates; follow us on social media for updates. We charge a submission fee for some genres to help cover operational costs. We waive this fee for BIPOC writers as a form of literary reparations.
