About the magazine

Bat City Review is a literary journal founded in 2004 by graduate students in the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin. From its inception, the journal has sought to publish work that is both formally adventurous and emotionally resonant, bridging the rigorous craft emphasis of the Michener Center with a broader literary community. Edited by rotating cohorts of MFA candidates, Bat City Review maintains a commitment to discovering emerging voices alongside established writers, with each issue reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of its current editors while upholding a standard of literary excellence. The journal publishes fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and visual art, and is distributed nationally.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Writers should submit only previously unpublished work and follow the journal's genre-specific guidelines, which are updated each reading period. Bat City Review typically opens submissions for fiction, poetry, and nonfiction during designated windows; simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify the editors promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Because the editorial staff rotates, aesthetic preferences shift with each cohort, so read recent issues to gauge the current sensibility. Include a brief cover letter with your contact information and publication history, if any. Response times can vary from several weeks to a few months, so patience is advised. There is usually no fee to submit, though occasional contests may charge a small entry fee.
