About the magazine

Founded in 1981 by students at the University of California, Berkeley, the Berkeley Fiction Review is one of the oldest continuously published literary magazines on the West Coast. Operating under the aegis of the Associated Students of the University of California, it has maintained a distinct editorial identity: a commitment to narrative craft, emotional resonance, and the short story as a vital form. While many university-affiliated journals have shifted toward experimental or hybrid poetics, BFR has remained a stalwart home for traditional and contemporary fiction that prioritizes voice, character, and the well-made scene. Its longevity is a testament to a clear, if unflashy, mission—to publish emerging writers alongside more established voices without regard for trend or theoretical fashion. The journal is produced by a rotating cast of UC Berkeley undergraduates, who select pieces through a collaborative, consensus-driven process. This student-led model gives BFR a particular energy: earnest, curious, and open to a wide range of styles, from realist domestic dramas to speculative fables. Each issue typically features a dozen or so stories, often interspersed with interviews or craft essays. The magazine has no formal affiliation with any literary movement, and its editors have historically resisted aligning with any single aesthetic. Instead, the review functions as a training ground for editors and a first or early publication credit for many writers who go on to significant careers.

Editorial focus

Berkeley Fiction Review looks for innovative short fiction that plays with form and content, as well as traditionally constructed stories with fresh voices and original ideas. It invites submissions of previously unpublished short stories year-round and publishes annually. The editors nominate for the O. Henry, Best American Short Stories, and Pushcart prizes.

The Berkeley Fiction Review accepts submissions of short stories year-round, though reading periods may vary; check the website for current windows. They typically seek stories under 5,000 words, with no strict genre limitations, though literary fiction is the core. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, provided you notify them immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. The editors appreciate clean, standard manuscript formatting and a brief cover letter that includes your publication history, if any. Because the staff is composed of students, response times can be slow—often three to six months. Do not query before that period has elapsed. Most importantly, read an issue before submitting; the journal values narrative coherence and emotional truth over stylistic pyrotechnics. A well-told story with a clear arc will fare better than a fragment or a metafictional exercise. There is no submission fee for regular submissions, though a fee may apply for expedited or contest entries.

Consider if your work is saying something new or saying something in a new way. Per our mission guidelines, we seek out innovative storytelling, whether in content or in form. Also consider if your work is conscientious of any potentially problematic material that appears in your work. Please read submission guidelines for more details on how reading periods vary by genre.
