About the magazine

Big Other is an online literary and arts journal founded in 2009 by a collective of writers and critics seeking an independent, non-commercial space for serious engagement with contemporary literature. From its inception, the journal has prioritized the essay, review, and critical commentary as vital forms, publishing work that is intellectually rigorous yet accessible. Its core mission is to foster a community of readers and writers who value thoughtful, unpretentious discourse about books and culture, often spotlighting small presses, emerging authors, and experimental writing that falls outside mainstream publishing circuits.

Editorial focus

Big Other welcomes submissions in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, lyric essay, art, video, short drama, and hybrid work from both established and emerging writers and artists. They are especially interested in experimental and innovative art, literary and otherwise. They also accept reviews, interviews, book excerpts, and craft essays. Big Other seeks to publish diverse voices, including works by women, people of color, and people who are queer, transgender, disabled, indigenous, international, and/or others underrepresented in literary magazines.

Before submitting, read several pieces to understand the journal's voice: it favors clear, engaging prose over academic jargon. They accept reviews, essays, and interviews, but query first for interviews. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Include a brief bio and note any relevant publications. Response times can vary, so patience is advised; if you haven't heard back in three months, a polite query is acceptable. Most importantly, pitch work that adds to the conversation rather than merely summarizing.
