About the magazine

Boulevard is a literary magazine founded in 1985 by Richard Burgin at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. It publishes poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, with a particular emphasis on work that is formally adventurous and emotionally resonant. The magazine has a long-standing commitment to supporting emerging writers, evidenced by its annual contests for emerging writers in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Its pages have featured early work by writers who have gone on to significant careers, and it maintains a reputation for curatorial discernment rather than trend-chasing.

Boulevard accepts submissions via Submittable, with reading periods typically open from September to May. They charge a small fee for online submissions, though fee waivers may be available for underrepresented writers. The magazine values work that demonstrates a strong command of craft and a distinctive voice. For the Emerging Writers contests, eligibility requires that writers have not yet published a book in the genre. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Response times vary, often 3-6 months, so patience is advised. Always review recent issues to understand the magazine's aesthetic before submitting.

Please include a cover letter and an SASE for reply. Electronic submission is available and encouraged. See our website for more details. Submitting online is free with a subscription of our rock bottom price of ten dollars.
