About the magazine

Blackbird: an online journal of literature and the arts was founded in 2002 as a collaboration between the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of English and the School of the Arts. From its inception, Blackbird sought to leverage the digital medium not merely as a distribution channel but as a space for formal and conceptual experimentation, publishing poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art that might not find a home in print. The journal’s ethos is one of serious, editorially rigorous inquiry—welcoming work that is ambitious, risk-taking, and attentive to the possibilities of language and image. Though the journal ceased regular publication in 2022, its archive remains a vital record of two decades of innovative contemporary work.

Editorial focus

Blackbird: an online journal of literature and the arts offers visitors from around the world outstanding fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and reviews, as well as plays, visual art, new media, and video essays, which it presents in inventive arrangements with an eye toward revealing the process of their creation.

As Blackbird is no longer actively publishing, artists and writers should not submit new work. Those interested in its legacy can explore the archived issues online. For current opportunities, consider journals and programs that share Blackbird’s commitment to digital innovation and editorial rigor, such as those affiliated with university arts and writing programs.

While it is true that excellence can be differently defined and construed, our primary definition will be this: Beyond simple obvious criteria such as “well written in a variety of technical senses,” and “original in terms of subject and style,” excellent writing challenges traditions in profound ways, and is radical insofar as it is aware of its own origins in tradition and seeks to expand the boundaries of the realm of discourse of which it is a part. We may close to submissions early if we reach our quota. Check before submitting.
