About the magazine

Consequence is a nonprofit literary and arts organization founded in 2009 by a group of writers and translators committed to exploring the cultural and human consequences of war. Based in Boston, it publishes an annual journal, Consequence Magazine, alongside a online forum featuring essays, poetry, fiction, and visual art. The organization's core mission is to provide a platform for nuanced, often overlooked perspectives on armed conflict and its aftermath, emphasizing literary merit over polemic. Through its pages, Consequence has fostered a transnational community of writers, translators, and artists who examine the enduring impact of violence on civilian life, memory, and identity.

Editorial focus

Consequence addresses the human consequences and realities of war and geopolitical violence through literature and art, offering intellectual and emotional access to the experiences of combatants, victims, and witnesses. They provide the public with works and voices from around the world to promote a clearer and more nuanced understanding of what’s at stake in choosing to wage war or engage in conflict. Their vision is to foster a comprehensive global awareness of the human consequences of war and geopolitical violence.

Writers and artists should approach Consequence with work that engages the consequences of war and political violence in a literary, not journalistic, mode. The editors favor submissions that demonstrate craft, emotional restraint, and a global perspective; translations are particularly welcome. Before submitting, read several issues to understand the journal's tone—it avoids overt activism in favor of art that illuminates. Submit via Submittable during reading periods (typically fall and spring), and include a brief cover letter noting any relevant background. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Response times average 3-6 months; do not query before then.

We are after work of high literary quality that addresses our themes. We also recognize that there is a wide range of work related to these themes, so in addition to the traditional perspectives and expereinces of war and geopolitical violence, we are also interested in works from writers and artists with less-traditional perspectives or who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, or from any other under-represented community. Our goal is to create an inclusive and comprehensive conversation surrounding these topics.
