About the magazine

Ninth Letter is a literary and arts journal founded in 2004 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Its name derives from the ninth letter of the alphabet, 'I', signaling a commitment to the personal pronoun and the individual voice within a broader conversation. The journal publishes poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with a distinctive emphasis on the visual and tactile qualities of the printed object. Each issue is designed in collaboration with artists and designers, making the journal itself a site of interdisciplinary experimentation. The web edition extends this ethos into digital space, offering a platform for work that engages with the possibilities of the screen.

Writers should approach Ninth Letter with an awareness of its dual identity as a literary and visual object. For the print edition, submit work that demonstrates a strong sense of voice and an openness to formal play; for the web edition, consider how the digital medium might inform the piece. Reading recent issues—both print and online—is essential to understand the journal's aesthetic range. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify the editors promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Expect response times of several months, and avoid querying before the stated period has elapsed.
