About the magazine

The Forge Literary Magazine was founded in 2016 by a collective of writers and editors seeking to carve out a space for fiction and nonfiction that is both finely crafted and emotionally resonant. From its inception, The Forge has prioritized work that demonstrates a mastery of language and a willingness to take risks, without sacrificing accessibility. The magazine publishes on a rolling basis, with a focus on short-form prose that often blurs the boundaries between genres. Its mission is to provide a platform for emerging and established voices alike, fostering a community of readers and writers who value substance over spectacle.

Editorial focus

The Forge Literary Magazine was founded by volunteers from the Fiction Forge, an international online writers’ forum, which counts amongst its members and alumni winners of numerous literary awards, including the Commonwealth Short Story Prize, the Bridport Prize, the Bristol Short Story Prize and the Pinch Literary Award in Fiction. Former members’ novels have been published by Bloomsbury; Chatto & Windus; Sceptre; Headline; and Little, Brown.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Before submitting, read several issues to understand the magazine's aesthetic, which favors precise language, strong voice, and narrative drive. The Forge accepts simultaneous submissions but asks that you notify them promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. They charge no reading fees but operate on a tip-jar model, so consider leaving a tip if your work is accepted. Submit only previously unpublished work, and include a brief cover letter with your submission. Response times vary, but the editors appreciate patience and professionalism.

We will open to fee-free submissions on the first of each month and close when we reach our quota, except for September when we run our annual flash competitions and December. Our staff shares editorial duties equally, we pay our contributors, and our taste is wide-ranging and eclectic.
