Editorial focus
Gulf Stream Magazine , started in 1989, is a national literary magazine published by the Creative Writing Program at Florida International University. It is a biannual online journal dedicated to publishing great fiction, nonfiction, poetry, hybrid writing and visual art. It also publishes first-book reviews and interviews. Please check the website’s submission guidelines for the most up-to-date information.
Submitting your work
Writers should familiarize themselves with the magazine's aesthetic by reading recent issues, available online and in print. Submissions are typically open during designated reading periods, which are announced on the website and social media. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if work is accepted elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, if any, and adhere strictly to genre guidelines: up to 5 poems, fiction and nonfiction up to 5,000 words. For hybrid work, specify the nature of the form. Response times vary, so patience is advised. The editors appreciate work that demonstrates a strong sense of voice, place, and emotional resonance.
Please be sure to read our Submittable guidelines carefully. We do not read paper submissions. Submit one short story or three flash pieces, one creative nonfiction piece, up to three poems, one hybrid piece with no more than five images, or up to five pieces of visual art. We hope to respond within three to four months, but due to the volume of submissions, responses can take up to six months. If you have not received a response from our editors in six months, please feel free to contact us.
