About the magazine

HEART is an independent publishing and curatorial project founded in 2018 by a collective of writers, artists, and designers. Operating at the intersection of contemporary art and literary practice, it produces limited-edition books, zines, and ephemeral objects that foreground materiality, collaboration, and slow attention. Its core mission is to foster a community of makers who value the book as a site for experimentation, where text and image converse without hierarchy. Rather than pursuing conventional art-world visibility, HEART cultivates an ethos of care, intimacy, and sustained dialogue between contributors and readers.

Editorial focus

HEART, a small literary journal from the lowcountry of South Carolina published by Nostalgia Press. Its spirited editor-publisher has freely given voice to writers from all over the world since 1986. HEART uses modern prose poetry, messages from simple moments, sparkling meditative thought. Essays: one to three pages, true personal experience, faith found, lessons learned, hope. An annual cash award is offered. Visit website for details and view featured writers at https://nostalgiapress.com .

HEART accepts submissions on a rolling basis, with periodic open calls announced via its website and newsletter. Artists and writers should first familiarize themselves with the press's catalog to understand its aesthetic and conceptual range. Proposals should articulate how the work engages with the book form—whether through sequence, texture, or collaboration—and include a clear project description, sample pages or text, and a brief artist statement. Given the small team, response times may be lengthy; patience and a well-researched, concise pitch are valued over aggressive follow-up. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable if noted, and previously published work is considered only if rights have reverted.

Submit prose poetry, no longer than one page per poem. Essays: no longer than three pages, true personal experience. Visit website, read featured writers, purchase digital or printed copy on website for preferred style and content. Annual contest cash award offered. Featured Writers on website are paid.
