About the magazine

I-70 Review is a literary journal founded in 2005 by a collective of writers and artists associated with the I-70 corridor, a stretch of highway that cuts across the American Midwest and into the Rockies. The journal takes its name from this interstate, embracing the metaphor of a thoroughfare that connects diverse communities and landscapes. Its founding ethos is one of accessibility and artistic rigor: to publish work that is both formally accomplished and emotionally resonant, without regard for the coastal biases that often dominate literary publishing. The journal aims to reflect the breadth of human experience found along the I-70 corridor and beyond, with a particular interest in voices from the Midwest and Mountain West. Each issue features a mix of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, alongside visual art, and is committed to presenting work that is carefully crafted and deeply felt.

Editorial focus

I-70 Review prefers writing grounded in fresh language, imagery, and metaphor. The editors prefer free verse with sound and rhythm of language. The magazine seeks individual voices with a good lyric voice or a strong narrative.

I-70 Review accepts submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction year-round, though response times can be slow (typically 3-6 months). Writers are advised to read an issue before submitting to understand the journal's aesthetic, which favors clear, image-rich language and strong narrative arcs. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. The journal does not charge submission fees, but it also does not offer payment beyond contributor copies. When submitting, include a brief cover letter with your publication history, if any, and a short bio. Electronic submissions are preferred via the journal's website; postal submissions are accepted but discouraged. The editors appreciate concise, well-proofread work and are particularly interested in pieces that engage with place, community, and the intersections of landscape and memory.

For fiction, we like short pieces that surprise us. We reject stereotypical or cliched fiction or poetry, as well as sentimental work that tells rather than shows. See the website for submission guidelines. We will read your submissions promptly and contact you promptly. We prefer submissions e-mailed to [email protected] . Please do not send us work you have not carefully revised and revised again. We read hundreds of submissions during the reading period and accept only the very best submitted.
