About the magazine

La Raíz Magazine is an independent literary and arts publication founded with the conviction that creative work rooted in personal and communal experience can challenge dominant narratives. Since its inception, the magazine has provided a platform for emerging and underrepresented voices, emphasizing writing and art that engage with questions of identity, migration, and social justice. Its editorial vision is grounded in a belief that rigorous craft and political consciousness are not mutually exclusive, but rather mutually reinforcing. By publishing both established and first-time contributors, La Raíz fosters a dialogue that is at once intimate and expansive, refusing the false choice between aesthetic refinement and ethical urgency.

Editorial focus

We print poetry and visual art. Prose poems and very poetic prose are welcome. There is no required theme, however recurring themes of published work include explorations of identity, culture, heritage, traditions, family, personal experiences, and social justice. The goal is to publish work that is personal, specific to a person or community, and written in a way that allows for people with similar experiences to connect emotionally with the poetry, while also having an impact on the general community.

Submitting your work

Reading periodJan 1 to Dec 15
Reading feeNo
PaymentContributor copies only
Response timeGreater than 6 months
Simultaneous submissionsYes
Unsolicited submissionsYes

Before submitting, read at least two recent issues to understand the magazine's aesthetic and political sensibilities. La Raíz favors work that demonstrates a clear point of view and a willingness to take risks, but it is equally attentive to line-level precision and structural coherence. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your submission without over-explaining it. Response times vary, so query after three months if you have not heard back. Above all, avoid sending work that feels generic or detached from lived experience; the editors are looking for writing and art that has roots.

We welcome work in English, Spanish, Spanglish, and work that is up to a fifth in additional languages. We don't print translations or footnotes and don't use italics used to indicate language. Browse issues at www.laraizmagazine.com . See all guidelines at www.laraizmagazine.com/callforentries
