About the magazine

Founded in 1994 at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland, Potomac Review is a literary journal that has long served as a vital forum for both emerging and established voices. Its founding ethos is rooted in the belief that literature should be accessible, diverse, and reflective of the human experience in all its complexity. The journal publishes two issues per year, featuring a mix of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction that balances traditional craft with innovative approaches. Under the stewardship of editor Julie Wakeman-Linn and a dedicated editorial team, Potomac Review has maintained a commitment to inclusivity, seeking work that transcends boundaries of geography, identity, and form. Its pages have hosted a wide array of writers, from debut authors to Pulitzer Prize winners, creating a vibrant tapestry of contemporary letters.

Editorial focus

From the shadow of our nation’s Capitol, Potomac Review looks out across its lush Potomac River basin, collecting and absorbing the world’s literary diversity. Embracing D.C.’s values of international inclusion, PR seeks work from emerging as well as established writers around the globe to facilitate the literary conversation.

Unsolicited submissionsYes

Potomac Review accepts submissions via Submittable during designated reading periods, typically from September to November and January to March. Writers should submit previously unpublished work: up to three poems, one story or essay of up to 5,000 words. Simultaneous submissions are permitted with immediate notification of acceptance elsewhere. The editors appreciate work that demonstrates a strong sense of voice, careful attention to language, and emotional resonance. Avoid genre fiction and overly experimental forms unless they are executed with exceptional control. Include a brief cover letter with publication credits, but know that the work itself is paramount. Response times average three to six months; please query only after six months. Payment is in contributor copies and a modest honorarium. For full guidelines, visit the website.

Do what you do; trust in your own voice; find the world in your writing. We may take some time to get back to you, but know that we read with attention and care. We do not solicit work; every piece we publish comes from the slush pile.
