Editorial focus
Quarterly West looks for writing that is, exciting, challenging, risky, unpredictable, and different. Different stomps in. Maybe it seeps in. Sometimes, and in one’s favorite works, different is always already there and it strikes flint and blazes. This is what the editors look for.
Submitting your work
Writers should submit only previously unpublished work. Quarterly West accepts submissions via Submittable during open reading periods, which are announced on their website and social media. There is no fee for general submissions, though a fee-based expedited option may be available. Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but notify the journal immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Expect response times of 3-6 months. Familiarize yourself with the journal's aesthetic by reading recent issues; they favor work that demonstrates formal innovation, emotional resonance, and a willingness to take risks. Include a brief cover letter with your contact information and publication history, if any.
Quarterly West opens for our contests in poetry and prose in Fall and for regular submissions in Spring and Summer. We also hold an annual chapbook contest and open regularly for Special Features.
