About the magazine

Founded in 1970 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Seneca Review is a distinguished literary journal with a longstanding commitment to poetry, lyric essays, and translation. Under the editorship of Deborah Tall and later John D'Agata, the journal played a pivotal role in defining and advancing the lyric essay as a vital contemporary form. Its pages have consistently championed writing that blurs genre boundaries, prioritizes associative logic over linear argument, and values musicality and intellectual risk. The journal remains a vital forum for innovative nonfiction and poetry, published biannually in print and selectively online.

Seneca Review welcomes submissions of poetry, lyric essays, and translations. Work that demonstrates formal ambition, lyrical density, and a resistance to conventional narrative closure is most aligned with the journal's aesthetic. Simultaneous submissions are accepted with prompt notification of acceptance elsewhere. Reading periods vary; consult the website for current calls. Submit via Submittable or postal mail as specified. Include a brief cover letter and bio. Expect response times of 2-4 months. The editors value work that takes risks and rewards re-reading.
