Submitting your work
Writers should submit polished, thoughtfully crafted work that engages with the journal's humanistic focus, whether through a Southern lens or broader thematic concerns. Review the submission guidelines carefully, as the journal has specific reading periods and fee structures; limited free submission windows, such as for poetry, are competitive and merit early preparation. Simultaneous submissions are typically accepted, but prompt notification of acceptance elsewhere is expected. Familiarity with recent issues will help align your work with the journal's aesthetic and intellectual standards.
Please do not assume from our name that we are interested in Southern literature or research topics only; any setting or subject matter is acceptable. Consider this comment from our founding editors, printed in SHR ’s first issue, back in 1967: “Our appeal to all of you—artists, scholars, teachers, scientists, humanists—is therefore a simple one: send us scholarly, informal, and creative writings thoughtfully conceived to enrich the mind and stir the heart.” The founding editors set for us a mission: to seek work that enlarges the humanities and, at the same time, touches the individual. The macro and the micro. The exterior and the interior. The physical frame and the beating heart.
