About the magazine

Stonecoast Review is a literary journal affiliated with the University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast MFA program, founded in 2014. It publishes poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, with a commitment to diverse voices and innovative writing. The journal is edited by MFA students and faculty, and it maintains a strong connection to the program's low-residency model, which emphasizes mentorship and craft. Its mission is to showcase emerging and established writers who push the boundaries of contemporary literature.

Editorial focus

The Stonecoast Review is a literary arts journal edited by alumni and students from University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast MFA Program in Creative Writing. It welcomes creative nonfiction, fiction (literary, general, and pop/genre), dramatic works, poetry, and visual arts (printed in black and white, except cover pieces). The editorial staff of Stonecoast Review seeks exciting work from both new and established writers, and especially traditionally marginalized voices.

Writers should submit polished work that demonstrates a strong command of craft and a unique voice. The journal welcomes submissions from both emerging and established writers, but it is particularly interested in work that reflects diverse perspectives and experimental approaches. Before submitting, carefully review the guidelines on their website, as they have specific reading periods and genre requirements. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify them promptly if your work is accepted elsewhere. Expect a response time of several months due to the high volume of submissions.

Our readers, as alumni and students of the Stonecoast MFA, are highly commited to anti-racist literature and publishing practices. Please tell us a little bit about yourself in your cover letter, not just where you’ve been published. We are willing to work with deserving voices and high-potential pieces to help get them over the finishing line and published. Publishing someone for the first time is an exciting thing for us! Please check the website for the latest submission period information.
