About the magazine

Founded in 1985 by Howard Junker, ZYZZYVA is a San Francisco-based literary journal that has published a curated mix of fiction, poetry, essays, and visual art for over three decades. Its founding ethos was to provide a West Coast counterpoint to the New York-centric publishing world, championing emerging and established writers with a discerning eye. The journal maintains a commitment to literary excellence, eclecticism, and the belief that a regional perspective can have national resonance. Under the editorship of Oscar Villalon since 2012, ZYZZYVA continues to publish three issues per year, each featuring a portfolio of artists alongside its literary offerings, reflecting an ongoing dialogue between text and image.

Editorial focus

ZYZZYVA is an award-winning independent San Francisco literary journal. Our emphasis is on publishing fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art by the best writers, poets, translators, and artists in California, but we also feature work by acclaimed poets and writers from all of the West Coast, from across the U.S., and from around the world.
