Bodhi Khaya Residency is an annual two-week, funded, artist-founded, artist-led and process-oriented residency. It was initiated by a small group of artist friends who, after being accepted into international residencies, recognized a lack of similar opportunities within the South African arts landscape. In response, they established the residency in 2021. Artists at Bodhi Khaya residency immerse themselves on three neighbouring nature reserves, Bodhi Khaya, Blomerus and Platbos, in the midst of an intense reforestation project, surrounded by old-growth Afro-Montane forests, fynbos, streams and regenerative farming projects. Participants are invited to explore, through dialogue, collaborative work and hands-on practice, how art can catalyze change—whether by nurturing sustainability, advocating for gender and racial equity, fostering social creativity, or regenerating lands scarred by exploitation. We envision art as a force for renewal, capable of restoring not only ecosystems but also our collective sense of belonging to the earth.

Bothy Project is a charitable organisation offering opportunities for artists and other creatives to conduct residencies in unique and inspirational environments. The network of simple off-grid shelters promotes a slower pace of life, providing more time for contemplation and resulting in increased exposure to nature and the local community. Bothy Project provides creative residences for practitioners in visual arts, craft & design, music, literature and performance, as well as thinkers, researchers, and people local to each bothy. Residents are able to use their residencies to explore creativity, landscape and living simply. Active in Scotland since 2011, its network currently comprises Inshriach Bothy in the Cairngorms National Park, Sweeney’s Bothy on the Isle of Eigg and Pig Rock Bothy which will soon be re-built in Assynt after nearly six years at National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh. Its spaces are bespoke, small-scale, and off-grid. Beginning in 2021 the bothies will operate as sentinels of communication with the best experience and learning generated by residents shared widely through a new public programme. Bothy Project is a charity supported by its trading arm Bothy Stores which donates a portion of its profit each year to support artists’ mobility and access to the Scottish landscape. Bothy Project was initiated by artist Bobby Niven and architect Iain MacLeod, realising the first art residency bothy in 2011 thanks to support from the Royal Scottish Academy Residencies for Scotland programme. The bothy was part fabricated during the RSA residency at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and then transported to Inshriach Estate near Aviemore where the build was completed in a traditional Scottish woodland area in the Cairngorm National Park. The Artist Bothy is an evolution of the Bothy Project network of off-grid artist residency spaces. Designed by the project’s founders, artist Bobby Niven and architect Iain MacLeod, it was developed in response to demand for a multipurpose self-contained cabin that can be located anywhere. Bothy Stores is committed to using sustainable, innovative materials and streamlined building techniques to create simple, modern products. Modelled on the Bothy Project’s popular Inshriach Bothy, the Artist Bothy is a pioneering piece of low-impact architecture designed to enhance the experience of spending time in nature all year round. The Artist Bothy furthers Bothy Project’s mission to support artist mobility and access to the Scottish landscape. Every Bothy purchased helps fund opportunities for artists and researchers to access the Bothy Project’s core network of residency bothies. To deliver this vision, Bothy Stores Ltd was founded in 2017. Bothy Stores is supported by Scottish Enterprise and Social Investment Scotland. The development of the Artist Bothy was supported by Susanna Beaumont. Each year, the organization offers multiple opportunities both funded and independently funded. Check their residencies regularly to stay updated. As of 2021, the Bothy Project has calls for three funded programs: Creative Practitioner Residencies , Neighborhood Residencies , Cross Currents .

The residency program BRUNAKRA Temporary has grown out of a personal interest for art and society particularly focusing on the artistic and productive process. It has from the start been the ambition to offer a sanctuary free from commercial interests giving time and space to work undisturbed on a dedicated project. They are also aiming to create interconnectivity between the art world and groups that generally is seen as standing further from access to cultural capital. BRUNAKRA Temporary (Brunåkra Kulturförening) has offered residencies in various forms to artists, journalists and writers since 2010. Today the overall ambition is to attract international cultural practitioners and to offer exchange of ideas with local and national networks. The residency program has been built up gradually over the years and they’re now able to offer three resident periods a year. The long term ambition is to invest in the development of a heated workshop and possible additional accommodation to be able to grant two or more guests at the same time. They offer the residents four weeks stay - the time is supposed to be used to concentrate on a project defined when applying for the residency. At the end of the visit the organizers normally arrange a public presentation by the resident, attended by a regular and recurring audience. The residents are also welcomed to seek contact with local partners for workshops or other kinds of exchanges.

Bucharest Air functions as a non-profit organization, run and managed by artist Tudor Bratu; in 2021, the residency is shaped as a collaboration between Bucharest Air and Quote—Unquote. Bucharest Air aims at generating and maintaining a high-level platform for cultural exchange in Bucharest. Quote—Unquote is devised and developed by Infinite Conversation, an independent curatorial unit founded in Bucharest by Dan Angelescu, Irina Radu and Cristina Vasilescu. Quote—Unquote is in charge of all on-site residency related activities. These activities range from aiding and assisting residents in research, development, and production of work, to introducing and connecting residents to the Romanian art scene and to the city of Bucharest, as well as organizational activities related to the daily functioning of the Residency program. They are also engaged with the general further development of Bucharest Air, including the maintenance of the Residency network and content management. Tudor Bratu is in charge of fundraising and content-based exchanges with the residents. All four members of Bucharest Air participate in the selection procedure. Alumni of Bucharest Air are at times involved as advisers. Starting from 2012 and up until 2020, the residency's framework has been formulated together with artist duo Alice Gancevici & Remus Puscariu. Previous collaborations include artist Ioana Gheorghiu, between 2013-2015. Bucharest Air has developed a specific structure, which over time has become the customary way in which the residency collaborates with the resident artist throughout the duration of the residency. This general structure, which is outlined in the paragraph below, is subject to constant change and development, according to the specific needs of the resident. It is therefore by no means a fixed program, but one in constant development, to which the resident can contribute through specific questions and suggestions. Upon arrival in Bucharest, the resident is picked up at the airport or train station and is brought to the residency location, where all practicalities concerning housing, transportation, telephone, internet, and location are thoroughly discussed. During the first week of the residency, the resident is accompanied by the residency manager on a variety of trips through Bucharest, which have the aim of accustoming the resident to the city and its possibilities. After the first introductory week, the residency manager maintains regular contact with the resident, depending on particular and expressed needs: some residents prefer less contact, some prefer a closer working relationship, and these needs are always respected. Throughout the duration of the residency, the resident is invited to openings and events in Bucharest, and if so wished, also outside of Bucharest, during which the residency manager introduces the resident to the local art scene, different venues, colleague artists, curators, and critics. The residency manager also aids the resident in all aspects involved in the realization of specific projects. The Residency can host and collaborate with artists and other practitioners working primarily with new media and internet, performance, research-based work, video, and moving image practice, voice-based practice, lecture-performance, installation, site-specific (public space) interventions, and others, all relating to the layers, mechanisms, effects, and politics of language and voice. Bucharest Air is further open to collaborations with curators, critics, writers, anthropologists, alongside experimental filmmakers. They highly encourage transdisciplinarity through collaboration with fields of activity other than the artists’, in a process of understanding the ramifications of public speech in arts, society, cultural and political movements, mass media, and many other aspects. There are no age restrictions, and the residency is open to all nationalities equally. Projects and proposals which take into consideration the specific context of Romania will have priority over more generalist approaches.

Xiamen University Art College Digital Media Art Department, Jimei X Arles International Photo Festival, Xiamen Design Week, etc. XI·ART MUSEUM (Xi, Stream in Chinese): Xi·Art Museum located in the Lucitopia Town, Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China. A wall-less open-air art museum is planned along a 7km stream in the valleys of Zixi Qingliang Mountain. With tranquil and pleasant environment, it resembles another time and another world. Lying at the foot of the Wuyi Mountains in the Northern side, it is about two hours’ drive from the urban center of Fuzhou. Thanks to its distance from the city center, the natural landscape of Zixi Qingliang Mountain, upon which the museum is planned, has been well-preserved. The dense forest abundant in negative ions and the gurgling stream free of excessive human traces undoubtedly make the Xi·Art Museum one of a kind. Two seemingly distant concepts – stream, a natural inspiration of human art and art museum, the place preserve the memory of life – are interestingly juxtaposed and combined at the Xi·Art Museum by the romantic hypothesis “The chance meeting of the stream and the art museum”. Deconstructing the usual spatial forms and production methods of art museums, the Xi·Art Museum blends in the natural landscape of Zixi Qingliang Mountain. As time proceeds, the relationship among nature, human, and objects will be continuously redefined, organized or updated at the Xi·Art Museum, a living natural museum unfolding its unique future. The Xi·Art Museum is currently in its infancy. It will begin to launch a series of projects and programs, including the Generative Project, Flowing Theater, and Forest Academy, inviting art practitioners, young designers, and creative groups to reside in the mountains and explore the relationship between nature cognition and sustainable life. In the end, the Xi·Art Museum also raises people’s awareness of the importance of environmental protection and sustainable development through artistic exploration and reflection.
