About the magazine

Founded in 2005 by editor Leah Browning, Apple Valley Review is an independent online literary journal published twice yearly. It was established with a clear and unpretentious mission: to present a carefully curated selection of poetry, short fiction, and essays that prioritize clarity, emotional resonance, and craftsmanship over trend or theoretical density. The journal has maintained a consistent editorial vision for nearly two decades, favoring work that is accessible yet layered, and that demonstrates a genuine engagement with the human experience. Its longevity and steady readership attest to the value of its unassuming but rigorous approach.

Editorial focus

The Apple Valley Review is an online literary journal. It is published twice annually, once in spring and once in fall. Each issue features a collection of poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction. The goal of the journal is to support and promote both emerging and established writers.

Writers should read several back issues to understand the journal's aesthetic before submitting. The editors favor work that is polished, avoids excessive irony or experimental fragmentation, and communicates a clear emotional or narrative core. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify immediately if the work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter with prior publications, if any, and a short bio. Expect a response time of several weeks to a few months. The journal does not charge submission fees, but it also does not offer payment—contributors receive a PDF of the issue in which they appear.

We prefer work that has both mainstream and literary appeal. Please do not send us strict genre fiction or erotica, work containing explicit language or violence, or work that is scholarly or critical, inspirational, or intended for children. Please note that these are purely editorial preferences. Work that is not a good fit here may be perfect for another market.
