About the magazine

Ilanot Review is an online journal of poetry and translation founded in 2020 by a collective of poets and translators. Its name, Hebrew for 'trees,' signals an organic, branching approach to literary community and a commitment to slow, careful reading. The journal publishes two annual issues, each anchored by a thematic call—such as 'TIME, HISTORY, ETERNITY'—that invites poets to engage with large, often philosophical questions through precise, crafted language. Ilanot Review prioritizes work that is formally alert and emotionally resonant, avoiding the merely topical or confessional. Its mission is to foster a transnational conversation in poetry, with a particular interest in translation as a mode of critical and creative exchange.

Editorial focus

The Ilanot Review publishes experimental as well as traditional work in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, hybrid literature, interviews, and graphic literature/art. It especially encourages translations. Each issue is themed and edited by guests who work along with the permanent staff. Guest editors are previous contributors. They are interested in creating conversations that couldn’t happen elsewhere.

Ilanot Review accepts submissions only during announced reading periods, typically aligned with its thematic calls. Submit 3–5 poems (up to 10 pages) via Submittable; simultaneous submissions are allowed but notify immediately upon acceptance elsewhere. Translations should include the original text and proof of permission. The editors value poems that engage the theme obliquely rather than literally, and they appreciate a brief cover letter that contextualizes your work without over-explaining. Response times average 4–6 months; do not query before then. Payment is $50 per accepted poem. Read at least one recent issue before submitting to understand the journal's aesthetic range.

Please see our submission guidelines for information about our upcoming theme. We seek writing that engages in the world, in ideas, in human interactions. We love work that challenges us and stretches our comfort zone. We are particularly fond of translated work.
