Editorial focus
The editors actively solicit writing that expresses the values of the Chautauqua movement broadly construed: a sense of inquiry into questions of personal, social, political, spiritual, and aesthetic importance, regardless of genre.
Submitting your work
Before submitting, familiarize yourself with the journal's aesthetic by reading several recent issues. Chautauqua favors creative nonfiction that is narrative-driven, reflective, and attentive to language—avoid overly academic or purely journalistic pieces. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify the editors promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Keep cover letters brief and professional; include a short bio and any relevant publication credits. Since the journal is online, there are no strict word limits, but most published essays range from 1,500 to 5,000 words. Proofread carefully, as the editors value clean, polished prose. Response times can vary, so query after three months if you haven't heard back. Above all, be patient and respectful—this is a volunteer-run publication committed to supporting writers.
