About the organization

Founded in 1956 at Colorado State University, Colorado Review is a literary journal with a long-standing commitment to publishing contemporary poetry, fiction, and nonfiction that is both formally adventurous and emotionally resonant. Under the auspices of the Center for Literary Publishing, the journal has evolved from a regional review into a national forum for writers at various stages of their careers, maintaining a reputation for editorial rigor and a discerning eye for work that balances craft with risk. Its pages have featured early appearances by writers who later became central to American letters, reflecting an ethos of nurturing emerging voices alongside established ones. The journal’s mission is rooted in the belief that literature matters as a site of inquiry and delight, and it seeks to present writing that is intellectually substantive without being arid, and accessible without being facile.

Creative disciplines

Colorado Review ’s only commitment is to the publication of serious poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. It does not publish genre fiction nor does it subscribe to a particular literary philosophy or school of poetry or fiction. Note that the editors read nonfiction year-round.

Writers should approach Colorado Review with an awareness of its aesthetic breadth: it publishes formal and free verse, narrative and experimental fiction, and personal and critical essays, but always with an emphasis on precision and voice. Before submitting, read several recent issues to gauge the range of work the editors favor—submissions that feel derivative or merely competent are unlikely to stand out. The journal accepts submissions via its online portal during designated reading periods, typically in the fall and spring; simultaneous submissions are permitted with immediate notification of acceptance elsewhere. Cover letters should be brief and professional, and writers should avoid querying about status before the stated response time (usually three to six months). Above all, trust the work: Colorado Review values writing that takes risks without sacrificing clarity, and it rewards patience and careful revision.

Please be familiar with the journal before submitting. We feature examples of each genre from every issue on our website. Successful writers are prolific readers. The simple cover letter is the best cover letter. Poets are encouraged to submit groups of poems that work together. Long poems are welcome. We are also a good home for essays and stories up to 25 or so pages.
