About the magazine

Copper Canyon Press is an independent nonprofit publisher dedicated to poetry, founded in 1972 by tree farmer and poet Sam Hamill along with Bill O'Daly and Tree Swenson. Initially based in Port Townsend, Washington, the press has grown into one of the most vital and enduring forces in American letters, with a mission to publish poetry that is both artistically rigorous and socially engaged. Over five decades, Copper Canyon has championed voices that might otherwise go unheard, from Nobel laureates to emerging poets, and has consistently prioritized the poem over the marketplace. Its catalogue includes works by Pablo Neruda, Czesław Miłosz, W.S. Merwin, and many others, reflecting a commitment to international and translated poetry alongside contemporary American voices. The press operates with a small, dedicated staff and offers internships that provide hands-on experience in literary publishing, often remote or hybrid, aimed at fostering the next generation of poetry advocates.

Submitting your work

Reading periodVaries

Copper Canyon Press accepts poetry manuscripts through periodic open reading periods, typically announced on its website and social media. Submissions should be a full-length collection (usually 48–100 pages) of original poetry, and the press does not consider individual poems or chapbooks. Before submitting, carefully review the guidelines for formatting and eligibility, as they may vary by reading period. The press values work that demonstrates a distinctive voice, emotional depth, and a commitment to the craft of poetry; it is less interested in trends than in lasting artistic merit. Internship applicants should demonstrate a genuine passion for poetry, strong attention to detail, and familiarity with the press's catalogue. Given the competitive nature of both submissions and internships, patience and perseverance are essential—rejection is common, but the press encourages writers to keep honing their work and to engage with the broader poetry community.
