About the magazine

The Florida Review is a literary journal housed at the University of Central Florida, founded in 1972. Over five decades, it has maintained a commitment to publishing a diverse range of contemporary fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, with a particular openness to emerging and underrepresented voices. Its ethos is rooted in the university's tradition of literary excellence and a belief in the power of the written word to illuminate the human condition. The journal is also known for its annual awards, including the Jeanne Leiby Memorial Chapbook Award, which honors the legacy of former editor Jeanne Leiby and supports the publication of a chapbook by an outstanding writer.

Editorial focus

The Florida Review publishes compelling new poetry, fiction, CNF, and graphic narratives from around the world. We welcome established and emerging writers.

Writers should familiarize themselves with recent issues to understand the journal's aesthetic, which favors well-crafted, voice-driven work over trend-chasing. For the Jeanne Leiby Memorial Chapbook Award, submit a cohesive manuscript that demonstrates a clear thematic or stylistic arc. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify promptly if accepted elsewhere. Always follow the guidelines on the website, including formatting and deadlines, and consider that the review receives many submissions, so patience is advised.

We are looking for innovative, luxuriant, insightful work. Surprise us! We appreciate writing that takes risks, affects the reader deeply, and foregrounds language and voice.
