About the magazine

Witness is a digital publication and editorial platform founded by the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Established in 2017, it emerged from the Institute's long-standing commitment to fostering literary and artistic dialogue, extending that mission into an online space dedicated to timely, politically engaged, and aesthetically adventurous work. The magazine takes its name from the act of bearing witness, and its pages are devoted to writing and art that confront the urgent social, cultural, and political issues of our time. Rather than merely documenting events, Witness seeks work that interrogates, unsettles, and illuminates, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented voices and perspectives that challenge dominant narratives. Its editorial ethos is rooted in the belief that literature and art can serve as acts of testimony, resistance, and collective memory.

Editorial focus

Witness seeks original fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and artwork that is innovative in its approach, broad-ranging in its concerns, and bold in its perspective. The magazine blends the features of a literary and an issue-oriented magazine to highlight the role of the modern writer as witness to their times.

Witness accepts submissions of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art on a rolling basis, though reading periods may vary. Before submitting, carefully review the full guidelines on their website, paying close attention to genre-specific word limits and formatting requirements. The editors value work that is politically and socially engaged, but they are equally committed to craft; avoid polemic in favor of nuanced, artful exploration. Simultaneous submissions are generally accepted, but notify them immediately if your work is placed elsewhere. Include a brief cover letter that contextualizes your submission without over-explaining. Response times can be lengthy, so patience is advised. Above all, read several issues of Witness to understand the range and tenor of what they publish—this is the best way to gauge whether your work aligns with their editorial vision.
