About the magazine

New Ohio Review is a literary journal founded in 2007 at Ohio University, with a mission to publish compelling poetry, fiction, and nonfiction that balances craftsmanship with emotional and intellectual resonance. From its inception, the journal has sought to foster a community of writers who value clarity, risk, and the transformative power of language, avoiding the ephemeral trends of the literary marketplace. Its annual NORward Prize for Poetry exemplifies this commitment, offering a significant platform for both emerging and established poets.

Writers should submit polished work that demonstrates a command of language and a clear emotional or intellectual core. For the NORward Prize, carefully follow guidelines: submit previously unpublished poems, avoid simultaneous submissions unless permitted, and include a brief cover letter. Reading periods are typically announced on the website; submissions sent outside these windows are usually discarded. Expect a response time of several months, and do not query before that period unless explicitly allowed.

We publish work that addresses the purpose and mystery of being, in any shape or form. We appreciate humor, if it’s got depth. We appreciate experimental work, if it’s not gimmicky. What we look for is a voice that is genuine, speaking with some degree of lucidity and intelligence about something that feels urgently felt. Only subscribers may submit via mail. Please do include a brief cover letter and an SASE if submitting by mail. We need to be able to contact you to accept your work. Please read an issue of New Ohio Review and visit our website to read work from previous issues to see the kind of work we favor.
