About the magazine

Founded in 1957 at the University of Oregon, Northwest Review is one of the oldest literary journals in the American West. From its inception, the review has been dedicated to publishing emerging and established writers whose work demonstrates formal ambition and emotional precision. Over six decades, it has maintained a reputation for curatorial independence, avoiding the pull of passing trends in favor of writing that endures. Its pages have hosted early appearances by writers who later became central to American letters, and it continues to champion fiction, poetry, and essays that balance risk with craft.

Submitting your work

Reading periodOpen now

Northwest Review welcomes unsolicited submissions of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Reading periods are typically announced on the journal’s website and social media; simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify promptly if your work is placed elsewhere. Editors appreciate cover letters that are brief and professional, and they value writing that reveals a clear understanding of the journal’s history and aesthetic. Before submitting, read at least one recent issue to gauge the range of work the review publishes. Allow three to six months for a response, and avoid querying before that window has passed.
