About the magazine

Storm Cellar is an independent literary and arts journal founded in 2011 by a collective of writers and artists seeking a space for work that is both formally adventurous and emotionally resonant. Operating without institutional affiliation, the journal has maintained a commitment to publishing emerging and underrepresented voices alongside established figures, with a particular emphasis on poetry, short fiction, and visual art that challenges conventional narratives. Its ethos is rooted in the belief that small, carefully curated publications can foster meaningful dialogue across disciplines and geographies.

Editorial focus

Storm Cellar curates writing that is surprising, formally and affectively innovative, and represents the highest quality of various literary traditions. Each issue reflects the current tastes of the editorial team. It actively prefers authors in underrepresented demographics, such as Black and Indigenous, POC, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, disabled, fat, poor, and border-straddling writers. Storm Cellar also emphasizes works connected to its home in the American Midwest, and includes striking visual art.

Response times typically range from one to three months, and the editors appreciate patience and professionalism in all correspondence.
